Net Zero Accelerator Market Engagement

LocatED, with the Department for Education, will host its Net Zero Accelerator market engagement session on Tuesday 15 August 2023.

LocatED has announced that it will be hosting a market engagement session for the Net Zero Accelerator programme, as the industry explores the best ways to decarbonise and meet the DfE’s ambition for the UK to be the world-leading education sector in sustainability and climate change by 2030.

The education estate represents 36% of all  public sector building emissions in England, and schools alone spend over £640m a year on energy. The education sector is one of the largest construction markets in the UK.

The ambition is to set up a new “loan and delivery” scheme to finance and deliver practical improvements to the education estate. The scheme will create estate efficiencies and unlock savings to deliver a positive return on investment – the “Net Zero Accelerator.”

LocatED is looking for partners to deliver a ‘proof of concept’ that will demonstrate the commercial viability of a range of decarbonisation interventions, including condition and fabric improvements, adaptation measures, energy efficiency and energy generation.

The market engagement session will provide more detail on the scale of this ambition and give an outline of the scheme’s requirements for the feasibility study, which launches in early autumn. During the session, Sharon McHale from DfE’s Sustainability and Climate Change Unit will provide further background on DfE’s ambition to achieve net zero in the school estate.

Chief Executive, Lara Newman said, “Meeting the challenge of fighting climate change plays a significant part in creating a safer, better, greener world for future generations. LocatED is working with the Department to ensure the education estate leads the way in the journey towards net zero and a more sustainable future.”
